Sleep apnea is a fairly common sleep disorder. It is also potentially serious, because it can lead to such complications as heart disease and depression. If you or someone close to you is suffering with sleep apnea, contact Crabtree Dental in Katy.
There are several different types of sleep apnea. What they have in common is that the person with it stops and starts breathing, over and over through the night.
The symptoms of sleep apnea include chronic snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, waking up with a dry throat, headaches in the morning, and irritability. None of these symptoms, in and of themselves, mean sleep apnea. But if they are persistent and together, it could indicate a problem.
One of the most common treatments for sleep apnea is a mask called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP. It fits over the nose and/or mouth, and blows air into the airway, gently and steadily, to keep it open while you sleep.
The upside is that CPAP is highly effective. But there is definitely a downside: many people find CPAP cumbersome and uncomfortable. Because of that they stop using it. At Crabtree Dental, we offer a smaller, non-invasive appliance that is both effective and comfortable. Most patients find relief using it.
