Periodontal Treatment
Did you know that conservative estimates calculate that 80 percent of American adults have some level of gum disease, and most don't know it? Periodontal disease, or gum disease, usually starts when plaque, the sticky substance on your teeth, builds up and hardens at the gum line. Plaque and tartar produce excess bacteria that damage gum tissue. Initially, the signs of gum disease are mild and may include bleeding or swollen gums. As the disease progresses, deep pockets form, more bacteria gathers below the gum line, and gums begin to pull away from teeth.
Without periodontal treatment, gum disease can lead to tooth loss. Research supports a link between periodontal disease and other serious health problems, including osteoporosis, stroke, heart disease, and complications with diabetes. During your visits, we will monitor your mouth and look for signs of trouble. If we discover gum disease, the hygienist can recommend non-surgical periodontal treatment such as scaling and root planing or antibiotic therapy. Sometimes altering your brushing and flossing habits will help improve the condition. Your personal consultation with the hygienist will provide you with the information and tools you need to combat gum disease.
